It’s official, I’m in my 3rd trimester! Two thirds of my twin pregnancy is behind me and the finish line is just a couple of months away. Week 27 has been full of new milestones and trips to the hospital!
Twin Pregnancy Update
How Far Along? 27 weeks and 5 day as of today. Measuring at 37 weeks if I was carrying a single infant. This is right on track for a twin pregnancy.
Maternity Clothes? I’ve been in maternity clothes for a while now. I’m most comfortable in sun dresses as they don’t put any pressure on my expanding belly. I’m already outgrowing many of the things I had used when pregnant with the boys, so I’m keeping an eye out for a few inexpensive things to wear during the summer months.
Weight Gain? I’ve gained 10 pounds as of this past Monday, but about 5 pounds of that is the babies. As I mentioned in my last twin pregnancy update not gaining a lot of weight until the baby puts on weight isn’t unusual for me. Although during the hot summer months I do tend to put on water weight.
Morning Sickness? It’s gone thank God. It has however been replaced by occasional heartburn.
Food Cravings? Lately I’ve been craving anything sweet like crazy. I’ve been trying to drink extra water instead of giving into my sugar cravings.
Food Aversions? My food aversions thankfully seem to be a thing of the past.
What I Miss? Sleeping all night long. It seems like I’m getting up every 90 minutes to pee at night, and I can’t get out of bed by myself anymore which means I’m having to wake Heith to help me get up.
What I’m Looking Forward To: This week it’s having my body back. I know I have a long way to go, but the babies have been pushing and stretching a lot and I feel like we are all running out of room.
Milestones: I’m finally at the start of my third trimester. The twins are about 14 inches long this week, and should weigh about 2 pounds each. As I have not had an ultrasound recently I am relying on average measurements for infants at this gestational age. The twins can open and close their eyes now, as well as suck on their thumbs and fingers. They also have regular sleep and wake cycles.
Movement: The babies are moving a lot, making my belly jump with their little kicks. They seem to have developed a pattern of being more quiet during the day and get very active during the early evening hours before settling down again around 9 or 10pm. Baby girl (baby A) is getting easier to feel as her little kicks and rolls are getting stronger day by day. She still loves to sit right on my cervix and bladder. It’s not a fun feeling, but thankfully the discomfort doesn’t last long. Baby boy (baby B) is still my active guy. He likes to kick and move making my belly jump. He has also been trying to stick his feet under my ribcage lately. As they get bigger and space is starting to run out, they are looking to make room anyway they can.
Hospital: I have been to the hospital twice this past week. The first time I thought I may have a leak in one of my sacks. After a few tests and being hooked up to the monitors for a couple of hours they decided I was okay and that my membranes were in tact. The second was a couple of days later. My OBGYN sent me to the hospital right from his office. My blood pressure had measured at 148/90 and the babies heart beats were on the rapid side. At the hospital blood work and a urine sample were taken. I was once again hooked up to monitors for three hours. My blood pressure was taken every 30 minutes, and consistently measured around 123/60. That along with no protein in my urine and positive blood test results ruled out preeclampsia.
Worries: Knowing that preeclampsia has been officially ruled out I really don’t have any worries. With that being said, this is the time in my previous pregnancies that I start having pre-term labor issues. Even so I wouldn’t call it worried but I am aware that these issues and am doing my best to listen to what my body needs throughout the rest of my twin pregnancy.
The Boys: I can’t say enough positive things about just how amazing KC has been over the past few weeks and months. As I mentioned in a previous post Heith is on short-term disability and because of that along with my pregnancy we have been asking a lot more from him. KC has never complained, is always willing to help even if it interrupts something that he is doing. I am just so amazed at how mature he has been lately. He has even taken a cue from his Dad and is watching me to make sure I don’t over do it. He still loves talking to the babies, and feeling them move and kick inside me. Whenever he feels one of them kick he gets a huge smile on his face and his eyes sparkle with excitement.
AJ is still having fun poking my belly and counting the babies. Sometimes we count only two babies and others like yesterday he counted 22 babies. We are spending a lot of time cuddling, and reading books together. One of his favorite books at the moment is, I’m A Big Brother. I think it is helping him see what having a little sibling might be like.
I know that no matter what it will be a huge adjustment for him and the rest of our family. I just hope that we are doing enough to prepare the boys for all the changes both exciting and yes frustrating that will happen to our family very soon.
Over the next few weeks I am going to continue my twin pregnancy update posts. Check back in a couple of weeks for more updates on our family. I do want to take a minute to thank all of you who have stopped by to give us your support both in comments and privately. It means a lot to me. Thank You!
