White Elephant Game – The White Elephant game is a lot of fun and works well if you have a larger group of people, 8-12 work best. Every one purchases a single gift at a preset price point, typically under $15.00. This game is more about the fun of playing the game than the gift exchanging itself so feel free to get creative with your white elephant gift.
Couples Gift Exchange – A couples gift exchange is a great way to purchase a single gift for a special couple. Some great couple gifts we have purchased in the past are movie theater gift cards, date night in a box (movies, popcorn, etc.) and a year long state park pass. My own family sets a price of $25.00 per couple.
Family Gift Exchange. This is very similar to the couples gift exchange. Instead of buying a single gift for each person buy a gift the whole family would enjoy. Think Gift card to the movie theater, family friendly movie for home, board games, art supplies, etc.
Homemade Gifts – Gifts made by you can be just as precious as anything bought from the store. Personalized gift baskets, or jar mixes (cookies, soups, brownies, etc.) are just two of the many great ideas you could create. Need some additional ideas? Buy Christmas Gifts All Year Long – You don’t have to wait until Black Friday to start your Christmas shopping. I start buying gifts for the following year as soon as the after Christmas clearance sales begin. You can easily purchase things through out the year (think end of season sales) as your budget allows and store them out of the way until you need them. This also is a great way to help stay on budget for birthdays as well.
Shop For Free – To help keep Christmas gift exchanges thrifty I often use Amazon gift cards and cash that I have earned through reward programs over the year. My favorite ways to earn gift cards and cash is through Swagbucks, My Points, and Receipt Hog. I will also save my credit card points I earn during the year and use them to help purchase gifts for the boys.
Big or small your holiday budget doesn’t have to get busted with all the gift giving you’ll likely be doing this holiday season. With a little preplanning and by using one of my seven thrifty Christmas gift exchange ideas you can save a pretty holiday penny.
Now that I’ve shared my favorite was to save, how do you keep Christmas gift exchanges thrifty?
