Receipt Hog was the first mobile app I tried, and have loved it ever since. It was very easy to get started with and has become a part of my grocery shopping routine since downloading the app last April.
What Is Receipt Hog?
Receipt Hog is a free app that you can download onto your iPhone, Android based smartphone or iPad. It rewards you for taking picture of your grocery and convenience store receipts. In some cases gas station receipts are also allowed.
With each receipt you upload a picture of, you earn coins. Once you have enough coins you can redeem them for cash through PayPal or for Amazon gift cards.
How Does It Work?
Receipt Hog is very easy to use. All you have to do is take a photo of your qualifying store receipt, make sure the image is clear, shows all of the required information and then hit the done button to submit. Once your receipt has been verified as a qualifying purchase you will be granted coins based on the total for that shopping trip.
How Does A Receipt Qualify?
Receipt Hog qualifying guidelines are fairly straightforward. Your receipts can be from chain grocery stores, including supper centers, shopping clubs like Sam’s and Costco or local mom and pop shops. On a side note, super center receipts don’t have to have a food item on them to qualify, they qualify simply because food is sold at that store. Convenience stores and gas stations are also allowed but a food item must have been purchased and printed on that receipt. Stores like shopping centers, home improvement and other retail stores are not accepted, for now.
You have 14 days from the date printed on your receipt to scan and upload it. For your receipt to be accepted you must have a clear image that shows the following: date, all of the purchased items, their prices and the total amount you paid. You will be allowed to scan up to 20 recipients per week, their week runs Monday-Saturday. However, only 3 receipts from the same store with the same date are allowed, so keep that in mind as you plan your shopping trips.
While your receipts and information is kept private and anonymous you have the ability to cross or black out some information. This includes: loyalty card number, prescription number, payment method, and any item you don’t want included on your receipt. E-receipts do not qualify for now. They do however have a small pilot group of scanners who are testing out new software applications allowing you to do this. So hopefully some day in the future e-receipts will qualify. I have however read that these receipts will not earn the same about of coins as your traditional paper receipts.
Tip: If you have managed to get a stockpile of receipts because you forgot to upload previous weeks, start by uploading the oldest qualifying receipt so that you don’t lose out on those coins.
Tell Me More About The Coins
Here is a general breakdown of the dollar and coin system. If your receipt is $10 or less than you will be rewarded 5 coins, between $10-$50 = 10 coins, $50-$100 = 15 coins and anything over $100 will earn you 20 coins.
On your Receipt Hog home page you have a bar that shows you a total for the number of coins you have earned that week. You can also earn extra coins by scanning or typing in bar codes on selected products, which will earn you two extra coins per item.
Going Hog Wild by submitting at least one qualifying receipt per week for five weeks gives you a chance to pull the lever on the Hog Slot Machine (something my four year old loves to help me do). The Hog Slot Machine will reward you for coins earned on your last receipt, all the way up to $100.00 but be warned not every pull is a winner!
Tip: Once you have earned 100 coins stop submitting your receipts for the week. Any other receipts you upload will only be worth five coins no matter the value of it.
How Much Can I Earn?
One of my favorite things about Receipt Hog is that they give you the option to be paid in either cash or Amazon gift cards. It only takes 1,000 coins to reach the $5.00 pay out, but if you save your coins you will get a much better value as it only takes 1800 coins to redeem $10.00, 3200 coins for $20.00 and 4500 coins will earn you $30.00.
