Saving money doesn’t have to be a hard thing to do, even on a limited income or very tight budget. There are easy ways in your every day life that are just waiting for you to take the small step it requires to save hundreds of dollars a year. In just a few minutes you could start saving money today with the five easy tips I have outlined below!
Create A Budget
My favorite money quote is: “If you don’t tell your money what to do, it will leave.” – Dave Ramsey. I have this posted on my budget book, my computer, my refrigerator, and even in my car. It is a constant reminder that I am in control of my money, and I must tell it what to do. Creating a budget is the first step in saving money, and while it may seem intimidating at first, it really isn’t. Creating a budget and having a financial plan is the most important part of any money management system. Not only does it create accountability with your money, but it lets you see just what you need to accomplish with it each week.
Call And Ask For Lower Rates
How would you feel about saving hundreds of dollars every year in just a few minutes? Once a year I call my insurance broker and ask them to compare the current services (car and house insurance) to what else is out there. There are years when I have found better rates for the same coverage and we switch, other years we find that we already have the best coverage for the price. You can also call your internet provider and credit card companies and let them know you have found better rates with their competitors and are considering a change. Then ask them what they can do for you to retain your business, many times they are willing to lower your rates if you just ask!
Skip The Drive Through Lane And Eat At Home
Skipping the drive through isn’t just good for your waistline, it’s good for your wallet too. While it may be tempting to get fast food at the end of a long day, a family of four can easily spend $20.00 or more on a single drive through meal. If you sit down at a restaurant, your costs can easily double or triple by the end of your meal. If you used that money to pay down your debt, how much do you think you would be saving in interest each year?
Reduce Or Disconnect Your Cable/Satellite Service:
Call your cable or satellite companies and let them know you saw a great rate with their competitors for new clients. Let the know that you are considering switching but before you do, you wanted to know if they have a good customer retention program you would qualify for. Cutting the cable cord has become a common place idea in thousands of households, including my own, across the country. With the wide variety of streaming devices and services makes watching your favorite TV shows quite easy. You could be saving $80.00-160.00 each year by doing this one thing. Those savings will add up quickly!
Do It Your Self!
The more you can learn to do things for yourself instead of buying a replacement or calling a repairman the more money you will keep in your pocket. Pinterest is full of great tips to help you become a successful DIYer from repairing your cloths, painting old furniture, and even making your own cleaning supplies. The possibilities are endless, and so is the savings!
