Summer is a great way to reconnect as a family, and spend that quality time together that can often be lacking during the busy school year. Many families travel to see loved ones out of state, or across the country seeking out new destinations. Not everyone however has the budget to get away on a family vacation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have plenty of fun scree summer activities your whole family will enjoy.
Fun Screen Free Summer Activities For The Whole Family
Take A Road Trip. – You don’t have to go far to have fun. Take a picnic lunch and head to the beach or a local tourist destination for a day of family fun.
Visit Your Local Park Or Playground. – My boys love going to the local park and playing on the playground. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon and run off some extra energy.
Host A Cookout Or Potluck. – Nothing says summertime like a back yard BBQ. Invite some friends over for an afternoon of back yard fun in the sun. You can make this party even more budget friendly by asking your friends to bring a dish to pass.
Visit The State Capital. – Have older kids? Take a day trip to your state capital. Introduce them to the place that governs your state, and if you’re lucky you may even bump into a lawmaker or two. Who says your kids can’t learn something over the summer months.
Visit A Farmer’s Market. – The farmer’s market can be a great way to remind your kids of the garden to table journey our food takes. You can also find all kinds of new things to
Go To Local Festivals. – We have a lot of small town festivals around here. They are a lot of fun for the whole family and often cost very little. Local venders often have handmade goods for sale, and there is often games and homemade treats as well.
See A Parade – Many towns have parades to celebrate the summer holidays. You can often find hometown and some large city parades around Memorial Day, 4th of July, and even Labor Day.
Have A Dance Party. – Get silly and have an impromptu dance party with the kids. Turn on some upbeat music and shake your groove thing!
Go On A Boat Ride. – Spend some time on the water. Go fishing, or tubing. Going for a boat ride can be a relaxing way to spend the afternoon. But don’t forget the sunscreen!
Play Classic Childhood Games – Enjoy some “old fashioned” fun screen free summer activities like hopscotch, red rover, telephone, tag, or Marco Polo. Get the whole family involved in the fun!
Wash The Car. – Get a couple of buckets, soap, sponges, the hose and have fun washing the family car.
Find Shapes In The Clouds. – Another one of my favorite summer pastimes is to find shapes in the clouds. Let your and the kids imagination run wild and see what you can find together. Take it a step further and tell stories about the shapes you see.
Go Visit The Grandparents. – Grandma and Grandpa hold a special place in our children’s hearts. They can make the simplest things into adventures and spending the day with them can be magical. If your lucky they may keep the kids overnight and Mom and Dad can have a date night.
Vacation Bible School. – Every summer my boys look forward to VBS at our church. It’s a program filled with fun activities while still learning valuable Bible lessons.
Have A Tea Party Or Picnic. – Put a blanket on the ground and enjoy a snack or meal outdoors. Little ones love an occasional and fun change in the everyday routine, and eating outdoors can be a great adventure!
Make Foam Dough. – DIY foam dough is a great indoor or outdoor activity that kids love. It’s easy to make with ingredients that can be found in your cupboards.
Go On A Scavenger Hunt. – Create a list of things for the kids to find then go for a nature walk. Have them collect what they find and once home again they can use their treasures to create a nature college.
Go Out For Ice Cream. – Nothing tastes better on a hot summer day than a scoop (or two) of your favorite ice cream. Going out for ice cream is a nice treat for the whole family.
Bake Cookies. – Not everyday can be sunny. On those rainy summer days baking cookies can be a fun screen free summer activities that the kids will have doing while cooped up indoors.
Go To A Balloon Or Air Show. – Many places across the US will be holding balloon and air shows over the summer months. Typically their entrance fees are very reasonable and your family can spend the entire day exploring the different exhibits.
