There are many ways in which you can create a frugal kitchen, some require more work than others. If you would like a few easy ways to save a little money, then check out these ten kitchen hacks.
10 Kitchen Hacks That Will Save You Money
Cool Your Cling Wrap. I don’t know about you, but I find cling wrap to be incredibly frustrating. It always wants to stick to itself, and it never wants to tare easily. Several years ago I came across a tip on the web that suggested putting your cling wrap in the refrigerator. The tip promised to make it much easier to handle, and they were right! No more wasted, wadded, mess.
Microwave Your Lemons. I have several recipes that feature the little yellow fruit. Many of them are best when using freshly squeezed lemons. However, it can be difficult to get all of the juice from them, even with a citrus press. There is an quick fix. Simply roll the lemon on the counter top applying a little pressure with the palm of your hand and then microwaving it for about 20 seconds will allow you to easily get more juice from each lemon.
Eggs Gone Bad? When you’re not sure on the freshness of the eggs in your fridge take just a few seconds to check them before tossing them. Simply fill a glass with cold water and gently drop a single egg in. If the egg floats then it has gone bad and should be tossed. If it sinks then the egg is still good and usable.
Just Freeze It. Have you ever had a recipe that called for egg whites but not the yolks or the yolks but not the whites. Don’t toss it, instead freeze it. You can also freeze vegetables and vegetable stock, chicken stock, herbs, wine to use in sauces, small amounts of cooked meat, bananas and more.
Over-Salt Your Soup? If you toss in a single whole peeled potato into the pot it will absorb the excess salt. No potatoes, no problem. Add a single tablespoon of sugar into the soup to help lessen the saltiness.
Fresh Tomatoes Going Bad Too Soon? Keep them fresher longer by storing them stem side down at room temperature. This keeps air from penetrating the scar where the fruit once attached to the vine. It will also help prevent the tomatoes from loosing moisture too quickly.
Keep Bananas Fresher Longer. Wrap the end of the bunch with cling wrap. This prevents the ethylene gas from being released out of the stem causing the bananas from ripening too fast.
De-crystallize Your Honey. Honey will naturally crystallize over time but that doesn’t mean it’s gone bad. If you have honey that has begun to crystallize simply place it in a bowl of hot water for 5 to 10 minutes. That will help melt the crystals and turn it back into liquid honey.
Keep Brown Sugar Soft. I’m sure we’ve all experienced the brick brown sugar can turn into if gets dried out making it nearly impossible to use. When this happens you may be tempted to toss it right out the window, but before you do try these simple hacks. Put a piece of bread, a couple of soda crackers or two large marshmallows in your brown sugar container while it’s still soft. The next time you go to use it, the sugar will be soft while the bread and marshmallows will be hard having given up their moisture to the sugar. Is your sugar already hard? Try putting the container in your microwave with a cup of water and heat it up for 30-45 seconds. The moisture in the microwave will be absorbed by the sugar softening it once again.
Boil Water Faster. If your short on time, you can boil water faster by heating half in the microwave for a couple of minutes and then adding it to the pot heating on the stove. This will not only save you time but it will save energy as well.
