How To Make A DIY Knight In Shining Armor Halloween Costume

Supplies:

My DIY Knight In Shining Armor Halloween costume costs pennies compared to mass-produced costumes found at your local store. Halloween won't cost an arm & a leg this year! TwoKidsAndABudget.comI was able to purchase the helmet, breastplate, shield, sword and silver glitter hairspray at the Dollar Tree. I already had the long sleeve shirt, and purchased the sweatpants on sale for $4.00 at my local Wal-Mart.

Total: $9.00 for the DIY Knight In Shinning Armor Halloween costume! The best part is that KC was able to wear the shirt and paints over the winter and a year later they are still playing with the knight components!

Directions:

  1. Lay out the old newspapers to protect your table or working surface from being covered in silver glitter hairspray.
  2. Place each piece of the costume individually on the news paper and coat them evenly with the silver glitter hairspray.  Wait until they are thoroughly dry to spray the next piece or the other side of the clothing.
  3. Once all pieces are dry, your knight in shining armor is ready for his Halloween fun!

*Note: Some of the glitter will rub off of the costume.  I strongly suggest putting a sheet down under your child in the car to catch the glitter.  That’s what we did, and you will be glad you did too!

August Traffic & Income Report

August has come and gone in a blur.  I spent the month recovering from my emergency C-section, traveling back and forth to the Children’s Hospital NICU an hour away, and dealing with postpartum depression.  Needless to say, August has not been an easy month, and my blog has taken a back seat because of it.

Even though August didn’t go as planned, I still wanted to share with you my August traffic & income report.  I share these progress reports as a way to keep track of my blogs growth, as a way to monitor the things that work (and those that don’t).  It’s also my hope that as my blog grows, seeing it happen will hopefully encourage other new and small bloggers to keep going even when their traffic and income are small.

August Traffic & Income Report

Even though I wasn’t able to give my blog much (almost no) attention during August my traffic numbers and income for the month held steady.  Something I am very happy, and very grateful to have happen.

August Traffic & Income Blog ReportAugust traffic breaks down to the following numbers:

Sessions: 5,567

Page Views: 15,474

Bounce Rate: 0.50%

Alexa Rank: Unknown – since I was unable to check it the last day of August I don’t have a number to share with you this month.

My August income for the month was: $31.08 earned through Google AdSense.  While I haven’t been paid for this yet as I still have a little way to go to meet the next payment threshold I still feel that sharing the total I have been credited with is important.

It’s my hope that as I start to feel better, after Heith has surgery on his foot in just a couple of days and LF eventually comes home from the NICU I will be able to pay more attention to this blog.

Our Twins Are Home!

The Twins Are Home! TwoKidsAndABudget.com

Our life has been extra busy the past few weeks between two active boys and making the hour-long drive up to the NICU every other day.  This coupled with getting ready for the upcoming school year and preparing for the twins eventual arrival home has left me more than a little exhausted.  I had planned on giving weekly twins in the NICU updates, however, with life more than a little hectic something had to give.

I was just 31 weeks & 2 days pregnant when the twins made their debut via emergency c-section on July 19, 2016. Read their twin birth story! TwoKidsAndABudget.comAs you may remember, HF and LF were born on July 19th at just 31 weeks and 2 days gestation.  They weighed just 3 pounds 15 ounces (HF) and 3 pounds 13 ounces (LF) at birth.  Since then we have been very lucky and truly blessed that the worst health issues that the twins have had to deal with was being a little jaundiced.

Unfortunately my recovery hasn’t been so easy.  It seems like I have been dealing with one thing after another when it comes to my recovery from my emergency c-section.  Starting with an infection I picked up from the hospital, a surgical seroma, a struggle to develop a milk supply that is finally plentiful enough to support the twins alone, and postpartum depression.  In the end however, I do keep reminding myself that all of these things are only temporary and that the most important thing remains the health of my babies.

Twins In The NICU

When I got pregnant last December I never dreamed that I would have twins, let alone have twins in the NICU for the first two months of their lives.  This whole experience has taught me to have a greater appreciation for the dedicated medical staff who care for expectant mother’s and newborns alike.

Over the past two months HF, and LF have made steady improvements with every day seeming to move us in the right direction and towards home.

The Twins Are Home! TwoKidsAndABudget.com

The Twins Are Home

HF was the first one to come home from the NICU.  She made it out of the hospital on August 29th and has been adjusting well to being at home with our family.  Her big brothers and the boy noise they make don’t seem to bother her, and she has everyone wrapped around her little finger.  KC and AJ love holding her, with Mommy and Daddy closely supervising of course.  We love having HF home building that family bond with her, and spending time getting to know her.

While it was nice having her home, it was still hard having a part of our family so far away. It felt like something was always missing and even though I knew he was okay, I still worried.  Thankfully LF came home this past Monday and he has been settling in with our family as well.  HF and LF are happy to be together again and we are happy to have them both home.

LF has had a couple minor complications, the first being a small hole in his heart that the doctors are watching but should close on its own over time.  The second being he has had to come home on a NG feeding tube, a small tube that goes through his nose down into his stomach.  His suck, swallow, breath reflex isn’t as strong as it should be and he is getting very worn out while eating.  It is also causing him to aspirate (milk going into his lungs), so for now he is still on the tube.  Heith and I had to learn to insert it and take care of it so that LF could come home safely.  He is also getting occupational/swallow therapy twice a week and we have a visiting nurse come to our home twice a week as well.  It’s a lot, but we are together and that is what is important.

As you can see there have been a lot of little, and a few big changes over the past couple of months.  Thank you to those of you who have been praying for my family over the past couple of months.  Your prayers are appreciated, and we can still use them.

Side Hustling On Amazon Mechanical Turk

A few years ago while searching for legitimate ways to earn cash I found Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Today it's still one of my favorite ways to earn. TwoKidsAndABudget.com

A few years ago while searching for legitimate ways to earn extra cash for Christmas I stumbled upon Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk).  Having tried several other ways to earn online, and with most of them turning out to not be worth spending time on, I was admittedly skeptical.  However, already being a satisfied user of Amazon I felt a bit more confident that this opportunity would pay out the way they promised.  Today it is still one of my favorite ways to earn extra cash fast.

What is Amazon Mechanical Turk?

Amazon Mechanical Turk also commonly referred to as MTurk  is part of the Amazon.com company.  The concept of Amazon MTurk is very simple.  The system brings together requester who are looking to have small tasks (HITS) done and workers (MTurker) who are willing to do those tasks to earn money for completing them.  Tasks often come from universities, consumer product groups, researchers, bloggers and small business owners.

How Does Amazon Mechanical Turk Work?
MTurk’s micro tasks or HITs (human intelligence tasks) are created by verified requesters and listed in the database along with the price paid for completing the task and the time allotted to complete it.  There is a large variety of HITs including: transcription (audio, video, handwritten), surveys, data entry, categorization and classification of a variety of information, etc.
There are typically thousands of HITs available to complete at any give time for MTurkers willing to work on them.  Some HITs do have qualification requirements, but many others do not.  With that being said however, qualifications are easily obtained and once you have them it opens up additional tasks for you to complete.
As an Amazon Mechanical Turk worker you simply log into your account, go through the list of available HITs for you and select the ones you want to work on.  Once they are complete you submit your work and wait for it to be accepted.  If accepted payment will be automatically deposited into your account from there you can transfer it into your personal savings or checking account.  You can also use the funds in your MTurk account right on Amazon.

Getting Started

Before you begin earning with Amazon MTurk you must be accepted as a worker, the same goes for the requester.  Amazon wants to make sure that you are a legally permissible worker, or a legitimate business or group if you will be submitting work as a requester.

The sign-up process begins with setting up your Amazon account it you don’t already have one.  Once that is done, head on over to Amazon Mechanical Turk to register as a worker.  Simply fill out the required forms which will include the Amazon Payments account page (this is how you get paid) and tax form.  It does take a couple of days for your information to be verified, but once it is you’re all set to start earning.

Earning Potential Of Amazon Mechanical Turk

A few years ago while searching for legitimate ways to earn cash I found Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Today it's still one of my favorite ways to earn. TwoKidsAndABudget.comEvery MTurker’s journey to higher earning potential is by meeting and passing different milestones.  The first is completing the 10 day probation period.  During the probation period you are required to complete at least 1 but no more than 100 HITs each day.  You will also not be allowed to withdraw your earnings during the initial 10 days.  However, once the initial period is over, you are no longer restricted on your payment withdrawals.

The next milestones that MTurkers meet and pass on their way to higher earnings is exceeding 1,000, 3,000, and 5,000 HITs.  As you pass each one, new HITs previously unavailable to workers with lower numbers will open up to you and your earning potential will continue to climb.  Thankfully you don’t have to wait until you have all these HITs under your belt to really start earning.

The e-book, Side Hustle From Home: How To Make Money Online With Amazon Mechanical Turk  is full of tips and to help you get started quickly.  It includes the best scripts, forums, requesters to work for and other resources.  At $2.99 this e-book is worth the price as it helps to shorten the learning curve when it comes to MTurking and earning a real income.

You can realistically expect to earn between $10-12 per hour and many MTurkes earn much more once you really get going.  There are individuals who earn a full-time income on the site but there are other’s like me who use it to earn extra income for the occasional holiday or birthday gifts.  Ultimately the amount you earn with Amazon Mechanical Turk is up to you and the effort you put into working on the site.

The Takeaway

Amazon Mechanical Turk is an easy way to side hustle and earn extra income from home.  It’s simple to get started, safe, you get paid quickly, and with some effort you can easily make a few hundred dollars a week.

If you have been an MTurk worker in the past or present please share your experience and any insider tips you may have to make the site work better for you and us!

Back To Schools Sales – More Than Paper & Pencils

Kids need lots of things to get ready to go back to school; backpacks, shoes, paper and pens. However, one of the most expensive things you may need are glasses. TwoKidsAndABudget.com

Kids need lots of things to get ready to go back to school; backpacks, shoes, paper and pens.  However, one of the most expensive things you may need are glasses.  Recently we had KC’s eyes checked as part of our preparation to start Kindergarten this fall.  He had complained that everything was looking blurry, that is until he tried on his Dad’s glasses and said, “wow I can see everything!”.  It was then we knew he may have a problem with his eyes, and promptly scheduled an appointment at RX Optical.

Kids need lots of things to get ready to go back to school; backpacks, shoes, paper and pens. However, one of the most expensive things you may need are glasses. TwoKidsAndABudget.comAfter doing a little research I found that we could get two pairs of glasses for KC at our local Wal-Mart for the same price we would have paid for a single pair at the RX Optical where the eye exam was done.  At the same time, at Wal-Mart his exam would have cost us $75.00 out of pocket as they don’t accept our insurance.  However, getting the exam done at the RX Optical only cost us the $15.00 co-pay saving us $60.00!

You need to shop around and check for back to school specials on the eye exam as well as where the best deal is on the glasses themselves.  You may even find, like I did, that those may not be at the same store and may depend on whether or not you want one or two pairs of glasses for your child.  By asking questions, knowing our options, and knowing the stores I was able to save us over $160!  Shopping around and watching prices is worth the time and effort it takes to save your families bottom line not just at back to school but all year-long.
